Sustainable Funding for Digital Equity, Community Access, and the CTN Network.
Connecticut is losing millions of dollars of tax income paid annually by cable TV companies. Why? They SAY that the tax only applies to their old cable service, that customers aren’t buying any more, and not the new service on the wire. This Doesn’t Make Sense!!
This income supports many things in CT like community access television and the Connecticut Television Network (CTN) AND, the playing field is not level!
Cable Companies have been getting away with a LOT in CT. They just raised customer bills by 10+ dollars per month in 2024! And, what about customer service? These companies have a permanent license to operate in CT with NO REVIEW PROCESS!
Legislators hear constituent complaints about these companies and wonder what can be done. Just yesterday, I heard about a senior citizen, a long-time cable customer receiving the exact same services since 2017 through today. His bill then was $174, and without any increase in services is now $270 in a 7-year period for the same service.
It’s Time to Make a Difference and Level the Playing Field – Did you know that cable companies receive a tax exemption on every piece of equipment, every truck they use while their telecom competitors don’t get that tax exemption?
This Doesn’t Make Sense! – Every company must pay their fair share so there is competitive neutrality.
Digital Equity in CT is Losing Ground – The funding mechanism for public benefits like nonprofit community access TV and CTN are losing money fast! Cable and Telecom Companies that use our public streets to deliver their products and services to customers must all pay, not just a few.
